Professor Ken Sorbie receives Lifetime Achievement AwardDate: 21 Nov 2013 Dick Weare (Baker Hughes), Ken Sorbie (Heriot-Watt University, Institute of Petroleum Engineering), and Steve Jackson (Baker Hughes)For the 30th anniversary of Oilfield Chemistry Conferences run by the Royal Society of Chemistry(RSC) the committee decided to mark the occasion by initiating a Lifetime Achievement award. Professor Ken Sorbie, of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE), was invited to become the first recipient for "his contribution to oilfield chemistry research and teaching." The intention of the RSC Committee is to make such an award at future events from time to time. Reflections on 33 years in Oilfield ChemistryAt the committee's request, Ken gave a talk reflecting upon his career. He presented 'Chemicals, Calculation and Characters: Reflections on 33 years in oilfield chemistry', in which he mainly paid tribute to the many 'characters' - both colleagues and students - he had worked with over the years. His specific thanks went to his Heriot-Watt colleagues Professor Adrian Todd and Professor Eric Mackay in the FAST group. Two of Ken's Flow Assurance & Scale Team (FAST), Nazia Farooqi and Scott Shaw, also presented papers on their current research, both very well received by the conference audience. Royal Society of ChemistryThe RSC is the largest organisation in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. Supported by a worldwide network of members and an international publishing business, our activities span education, conferences, science policy and the promotion of chemistry to the public. The 2013 Chemistry in the Oil Industry XIII was held 4th-6th November in the Manchester Conference Centre, UK.
