Abstract
Upgrading of 12.4 °API, Bati Raman (Turkey) heavy oil
with microwave heating is investigated. Upgrading
performance of the heavy oil is studied through viscosity,
temperature measurements. Differing amounts of Fe2O3,
FeCl3, and Fe powder were added to heavy oil to observe effect
of metallic additives on microwave heating. Upgrading of
heavy oil with microwave energy produced oil with pipeline
specification viscosity such that the viscosity reduced from 2400
cp to 120 cp when metallic additives are used. It is observed
that the concentration of the metallic additive is more important
compared to heating time as long as enough time is allowed for
the chemical reactions to occur. Furthermore, sand pack
microwave upgrading experiments conducted using a state of
the art graphite model, are used to confirm upgrading results.
Experiments are successfully simulated using a thermal
simulator. |
