    Title:Simulation Breakthrough Time and Optimum Horizontal Well Location in Three Phase Systems

    Abstract:

    In this paper, a methodology is examined to predict the simultaneous gas and water breakthrough times and the optimum location for a horizontal well, defined as the location where the gas and water crests break through at the same time. The correlations established here are based on extensive simulation runs using a black-oil simulator. This approach follows that of Papatzacos et al (1) , though we generalize their work to account for reservoirs with finite dimensions and varying aquifer strength.

    The formulation is further extended for heterogeneous reservoirs with large correlation lengths of permeability in the horizontal direction. All reservoirs are synthetic and the properties are generated using unconditional sequential Gaussian simulation(3). It is shown that the ensemble-averaged performance can be predicted using effective horizontal and vertical permeabilities, which are obtained from single phase flow calculations. A new correlation is developed between the breakthrough time of individual realizations and the near-well horizontal permeability distribution. Using this correlation, reasonable predictions for simultaneous gas and water breakthrough times can be obtained for individual realizations.
