    General Purpose Research Simulator (GPRS)

    We present a novel reservoir flow simulation framework Automatic Differentiation General Purpose Research Simulator (ADGPRS) for modeling of flow in porous media for mixtures with arbitrary number of phases. This framework unifies different type of phases typical for flow of multi-component at equilibrium conditions. The participation of any components in any phases is computed using mixed phase equilibrium assumption and any component can be directly excluded from partitioning in any phase. This type of simulation is very important for modeling of natural and industrial processes such as development of natural hydrocarbon resources, including gas-hydrates, CO2 injection to hydrocarbon reservoirs and saline aquifers, thermal processes. We use Fully Implicit time approximation with general extension to Adaptive Implicit Method (AIM) using flexible algebraic reduction. The framework built on top of an Automatic Differentiation with Expression Templates Library (ADETL) which generates the corresponding derivatives for any nonlinear relation and helps to construct Jacobian matrix for the nonlinear solver. That makes possible to unify a general simulator code for different compositional formulations and complex physical models, including thermal. Phase behavior for the new framework is calculated using standard multiphase flash with initial conditions (stability analysis) based on Compositional Space Parameterization (CSP), which helps to improve both efficiency and robustness of the standard EoS computations. The framework allows for complete flexibility in the specification of the independent variables, which leads to a unified simulator for different formulations and solution strategies. Several widely used nonlinear formulations and solution strategies for compositional simulation are incorporated as a part of the simulation framework. The general extension of two-phase variable substitution is using to handle the phase appearance and disappearance for system with an arbitrary number of phases.


    GPRS is a next generation of research simulator developed in our research group. GPRS uses modular object-oriented design and is easy to extend. GPRS software is written by standard C++ with object-oriented programming.

    GPRS incorporates all reservoir simulation models and techniques and can be used by multiple researchers with various purposes of reservoir engineering and management. The major features of GPRS are:

    ·  Structured or unstructured grid

    ·  Black-oil or compositional fluid

    ·  Two-point or multi-point flux

    ·  Arbitrary choice of primary variables

    ·  Variable implicit levels (FIM, IMPES, IMPSAT, AIM…)

    ·  Direct Lapack solvers and several iterative linear solvers with many different pre-conditioners

    ·  Multiple segment well with chokes, drift-flux wellbore flow model

    GPRS has grown very fast with multiple developers. I am the technical leader to manage GPRS development team which consists of research associates, post-docs, Ph.D. and MS students. The ongoing development projects are:

    ·  Thermal simulation with efficiently solving coupled energy and flow equations

    ·  Coupling with multiple segment well with downhole control devices, multiphase wellbore flow with drift-flux model

    ·  CO2 sequestrations in saline aquifers

    ·  Parallel with MPI in Linux and Unix operation systems

    ·  Efficient linear solver with block data structure

    ·  Efficient phase equilibrium computations in the compositional simulations
