www.utah.edu
该校也有地质和地球物理专业。
两位石油工程的教授:

Research Interests
• Oil and gas characterization, high-pressure hydrocarbon thermodynamics
• Wax and asphaltene precipitation and flow assurance
• Supercritical extraction of complex mixtures
• Heavy oil production and processing; oil sands and oil shale
• Reservoir engineering, enhanced oil recovery
• Reservoir simulation; particular emphasis – finite element simulation of systems of complex geometry, fractured, faulted reservoirs
• Carbon dioxide sequestration
Providing adequate energy in a sustainable manner is the most challenging technical task of this generation. My research program is broadly based on three activity categories in the energy area.
• Fluid characterization: We have one of the most well equipped laboratories for oil and gas characterization.
• Fluid interactions and thermodynamics: We study thermodynamics of oils, gases and solids (asphaltenes, waxes) and also thermodynamics and kinetics of minerals and carbon dioxide. We have high-pressure capabilities and a well instrumented flow loop.
• Simulation of subsurface flow processes: Focus is currently on oil and gas reservoir simulation in systems of complex geometry, but we have looked at other applications such as CO2 sequestration. We have good computational facilities including an in-house 18-processor cluster.
Currently, my students and I are working on the following projects.
Recovery and upgrading of heavy oil from oil shale and oil sands
We are looking at the challenges of utilizing vast resources of oil shale and oil sands in North America as part of the activities for the Utah Heavy Oil Center.
Carbon dioxide sequestration in subsurface formations
In this project, we are studying the fundamental mineralogical reactions of gases of various compositions with rocks and brine. We will use this information in subsurface flow models to assess the integrity of CO2 storage.
Wax precipitation and pipeline restart
We are examining wax precipitation in crude oil pipelines and pipeline restart if the gelling occurs.
Reservoir simulation of fractured/faulted reservoirs
We have developed a series of finite-element reservoir simulators to handle reservoirs with complex geometry. These simulators are modular and parallel. We continue working on algorithmic development and application testing.
Other reservoir engineering projects
We are scoping out a number of reservoir engineering projects with our geologic partner, Energy and Geosciences Institute (EGI, www.egi.utah.edu). These include projects on reservoir compartmentalization, tight-gas production and shale gas dynamics.

Research Interests
• Gas Storage Mechanisms in Resource Plays
• Stimulating Low Permeability Reservoirs
• CO2 EOR – Resource Audit and Technology Development
• Enhanced Geothermal Systems
The research interests shown above reflect the changing metrics of energy recovery and usage - in the United States and internationally. Natural gas is currently being produced from so-called shale resource plays which are volumetrically extensive accumulations in organically-rich formations that act as the source of the gas and also act as the reservoir. Optimizing production from these reservoirs requires new-generation numerical simulation of flow through natural and hydraulically induced fractures. Combining fracture mechanics with fracture flow modelling is relevant. Using carbon dioxide as a tertiary recovery medium also offers potential in many areas beyond where it is currently employed; it is used extensively in the Permian basin in West Texas, and offers potential for limited sequestration but substantial improvement in oil production. Environmental handling of drill cuttings through reinjection is also of interest. Outside of fossil fuels, geothermal energy development - from low permeability, hot reservoirs; enhanced or engineered geothermal systems - provides research potential that is similar to improving natural gas production from ultralow permeability shales. Ultimate success for geothermal exploitation also entails optimizing surface facilities and heat transfer/conversion protocols.
In terms of unconventional resources as well as more conventional hydrocarbon extraction, research interests include improving understanding of conductivity preservation in fractures by avoiding embedment and scaling, recognizing fracture mechanics considerations for propagation of fractures and using fluids to chemomechanically increase or decrease the strength and deformability of geologic formations.
