Title:  Cost effective integration of subsea processing technologies to a high watercut brownfield asset, a Bonga field case study
    Authors:  Benibo, Soala Secon
    Supervisors:  Allwood, R. L. (supervisor)
    Issue Date:  Sep-2007
Abstract:  The ever increasing water depths and tie-back distances of new offshore developments and rising watercuts of mature assets have made conventional topside processing of oil and gas economically unattractive, leaving operators to focus more on economically viable solutions. Subsea processing which involves a myriad of building blocks for processing the well fluid on the seabed is currently a topical issue in this category. The application of subsea processing to a brownfield development is influenced by a number of field specific and economic factors which introduce complexity to the concept selection process. Establishing the most effective and economically viable processing solution will therefore require an integrated and truly holistic decision making process. This project discusses a comprehensive decision making process which involves ranking of selection parameters and development scenarios, allowing optimal redevelopment of high watercut brownfield assets. The status of subsea processing technologies applicable to a high watercut brownfield asset has been reviewed and a Subsea Technology Assessment Chart (STAC) developed to enable quick decision making during concept selection. The process developed has been applied to the Bonga field, offshore West Africa from which, subsea separation, oil boosting and produced water re-injection has been selected. A scheme for integrating the selected technology to the Bonga field has also been proposed. Three different Hysys Models have been developed for the field and a comparative hydraulic analysis conducted to determine the effects of increasing watercut, water depth and seabed separation on topsides production parameters. Interesting results indicate a 23% increase in production with integration of seabed separation on the Bonga field. Results also show dual, opposing effects of seabed water separation on the topsides oil temperature. The challenges associated with the integration of proposed subsea technology on the Bonga field have also been discussed.
